International Purple Fest hosted by the Office of the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities In Goa, marked a groundbreaking celebration of inclusivity, highlighting the importance of unity and diversity in addressing the needs of persons with disabilities. As one or lndia’s first inclusive festivals, the event underscored the commitment to creating a more accessible world.
A key highlight of the fest was the recognition of 22 Purple Ambassadors, each representing one of the 21 types of disabilities recognized under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act,2016.
The Purple rest featured an exhibition of assistive aids and emerging technologies designed to meet the diverse needs of the community. EMA showcased innovative solutions to infrastructure inaccessibility and offered informative accessibility explainer videos promoting understanding of accessibility standards and laws. An introductory workshop for an advanced Accessibility Training Course attracted 12 participants eager to enhance their skills.
A transformative Assistive Devices Distribution Camp was organized by Swayampurna Mitras in their respective Village Panchayats under the Assistance to Persons with Disabilities for Purchase/Fitting of Aids and Appliances (ADlP) Scheme. This initiative in collaboration with the Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO), aimed to provide essential support to those in need ensuring that assistive devices reach the most deserving individuals.
The camp served as a vital plat form assessing the needs of 520 individuals with disabilities. After thorough evaluations. the Swayampurna Mitra facilitated the distribution of essential aids and appliances to 150 individuals enhancing their mobility, independence and quality of life. Furthermore, the camp also extended its services to senior citizens assessing 67 elderly individuals. As a result, 29 senior citizens were provided with assistive devices tailored to their needs enhancing their comfort and daily functioning.
In total 715 individuals benefited from this camp, a testament to the Swayampurna Mitras unwavering dedication to ensuring that essential aids and appliances are accessible to a broader section of society.
Additionally, the PMDK distributed over 100 wheelchairs during the fest, facilitated by the GMC’s permanent ALIMCO center ensuring that individuals receive necessary devices promptly.
The International Purple Fest exemplified India’s ongoing journey toward inclusivity, showcasing the collaborative efforts essential for societal change.
